For a few moments there was silence between them. Yala’s heart was beating so quickly she was sure the king must be able to feel it.

“You seem quite tongue-tied,” he said, “it’s a little too late to be shy, don’t you think?”

Yala felt her cheeks turn as pink as her gown. “It was unkind of your majesty to let me prattle on like that. You must think me an utter fool.”

He looked down at her, and they were so close that she almost felt she could see herself mirrored in his eyes.

“It was not my intention to make you feel a fool,” he said. “I found your questions intriguing.”

“Do you think the price of fig brandy is going to go up or down?” she asked.

He looked at her, baffled for a moment, then laughed. “You’ve been talking to my father,” he said. “Did he ask you if you preferred cats to dogs?”

“He did,” she said. “It seems he’s very fond of dogs.”

“He is,” the king said. “Once, when I was a boy, I thought it might please him if he had a vampire puppy as a companion. I bribed a vampire guardsman to blood-mark a dog and gave it to him as a present.”

“I’ve never heard of such a thing,” Yala said.

“That’s because it didn’t work,” the king said.

“The dog lived a long and happy life by his side, but lived no longer than any other dog.”

He smiled at the memory. In that smile Yala saw the boy he once had been, and in that moment her heart flipped over.

I wanted to think the king was like the vampire lords who come to gamble at the House, Yala realized. I wanted to think that there was nothing special about the king so I would not compare him to the men I know and find the comparison unbearable. But he’s nothing like them at all.

With a pang, Yala realized the music was reaching a crescendo and the dance was about to end.

“They’re still watching,” she whispered to the king as he danced her back to their starting point.

He gave her an amused look. “Shall we give everyone something to talk about?”

Before she understood what he meant, he bent and kissed her.

Yala had never been kissed, and the press of his lips upon hers so surprised her that she opened her mouth. The king took this as an invitation to kiss her even more deeply.

Heedless of the watching guests, Yala responded to his urgency.

She instinctively tightened her grip on his shoulder, wanting to tug him closer, and he responded by tightening his grip on her waist and pulling him tighter against him.

Yala felt the heat of his fingers through the thin silk of her gown and suddenly had the wanton thought that she wanted nothing more than to touch him skin to skin.

As if he could read her mind, the king pulled her even closer, close enough that she could feel his desire for her.

The hand on her waist traveled upward, and his other hand cupped her cheek with a tenderness she had never imagined possible.
